On Thursday, 11th of January Tartu City Museum is opening an exhibition called Karl August Hermann’s Print Shop and Publications. The exhibition introduces the 19th century print shop, that was located in the same building as Tartu City Museum these days, and it’s publications. The print shop was located on the first floor of this historical building. Hermann had acquired the newspaper Perno Postimees in 1886. He renamed it Postimees. For the next ten years Hermann published Postimees in Tartu at his print shop called Hermann’s Print Shop.Enriched with lectures* on Estonian 19th century journalism, the exhibition introduces both Hermann’s Print Shop (1886-1940) and the historical publications that were produced there. The curator Tenno Teidearu (on the photo) explained that Hermann’s Print Shop holds significant importance in Estonian culture histroy due to what was printed there. “Many important pieces of literature and journalism were printed here: the first daily newspaper in Estonian Postimees, musical journal Laulu ja Mängu Leht (loosely translates as Sheet of Song and Play), encyclopedia, textbooks on Estonian grammar,” Teidearu listed. The exhibition offers an insight to late 19th century and early 20th century Estonian literature. One can get acquainted with both 19th century newspapers and commercials in them. * The lectures are held in Estonian.
