Natural and Archaeological Heritage of Ihaste

Tartu City MuseumExhibition

Tartu City Museum is visiting Ihaste! On June 7th, In collaboration with the Union of Residents of Ihaste, we are opening an open-air exhibition next to Varsa bus stop. The exhibition introduces the archaeological and natural heritage of Ihaste to passers-by and interested people. Come and see!

Many residents of Ihaste have chosen this district as their home precisely because it is one of the greenest and most nature-integrated areas of Tartu city. But did you know that this natural environment was an attractive place for people to live even 10,000 years ago? Archaeologists have determined that it was here that Tartu’s oldest known Stone Age human settlement existed already nearly 8,000 years BC. In this small exhibition, one can learn more about the unique biodiversity of present-day Ihaste as well as its Stone Age history. This exhibition was born from the recognition that the natural environment has always been important in choosing a place to live.
