This presentation is part of the Kumu Art Museum’s exhibition “Kuhu kadus Tartu. Hilda Kamdroni traumatsüklid” (“Where Did Tartu Go? Hilda Kamdron’s Cycles of Trauma”, November 14, 2024 – March 2, 2025, curated by Eero Epner) and will remain open here until June 15, 2025. Kamdron’s art remained hidden from the public for decades in Soviet Estonia, yet her drawings preserve the story of a Tartu that vanished from sight.

Hilda Kamdron studied graphic art at Tartu’s renowned Pallas Art School in her youth and stood out for her exquisite drawing skill. However, in the Soviet era after World War II she fell victim to political repression – in 1946 Kamdron was accepted into the Estonian SSR Artists’ Union, but in 1948 she was expelled as “ideologically unsuitable”. This decision stripped the artist of the opportunity to participate in official exhibitions and led to her quiet disappearance from the art scene for decades.

In the postwar years, Kamdron focused on recording the rapid changes in her hometown. Her drawings document two major traumas in Tartu’s history: the destruction of the city in the bombing of 1944, and the bulldozing of old neighborhoods to make way for the new Annelinn housing district. The artist approached these upheavals with emotional acuity – her images reflect the devastating impact of war and the profound sadness and disorientation of those facing the relentless advance of modernisation.

Kamdron captured Tartu in meticulous detail. The Tartu City Museum’s collection contains nearly two hundred of her drawings and watercolours from the Second World War and its aftermath, depicting the cityscape in the throes of unprecedented change. In these images we see central Tartu’s streets in ruins, demolition sites of old wooden houses, and the first 4–5-story panel apartment blocks rising in their place. The Soviet “reconstruction” of Tartu was viewed by the artist as a continuation of destruction – for example, she pointedly referred to the new Annelinn district by the nickname “Trash Hill neighbourhood,” alluding to its location on a former dump.

Because Kamdron could not participate in official exhibitions during her lifetime, many of her works remained unfinished sketches. Yet it is precisely thanks to this that the artist’s own notes have been preserved on the drawings – she marked the direction of sunlight and the placement of shadows, and added sharply critical remarks about the subjects. These candid notations convey the artist’s emotions and critical attitude toward the changes happening around her, offering viewers an extraordinarily personal perspective on postwar Tartu. Kamdron’s meticulously detailed sketches, together with her personal commentary, form an invaluable visual chronicle of the city – a unique legacy that the public can now, decades later, rediscover within the walls of the KGB prison cells.

[64
post-14170","exhibition","type-exhibition","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-kgb-cells-museum

An exhibition of Hilda Kamdron's pencil drawings in the KGB cells - Tartu Linnamuuseum

<meta property="og:description" content="A small selection of pencil drawings by Tartu artist Hilda Kamdron (1901–1972) is on display at the KGB Cells Museum in Tartu.
